Intrepid, sensitive, funny and creative, nine-almost ten-year old Ruthie Pincus narrates these family stories, based on the author's childhood, which plumb the depths of relationships between four siblings and their parents, living in 1950's Brooklyn, New York. Encountering her challenges, conflicts, sorrows and joys, Ruthie finds her courage, her place in her family, and herself.
Ruthie Pincus of Brooklyn is written for young adults, and for those others who remember their own childhoods, and so remain forever young. Several stories about these characters have appeared in Cricket Magazine, and Pappa and Ruthie are featured in the author's Uncle Phil's Diner (Carolrhoda Books, 1998) which was a Smithsonian List Book.
Ruthie Pincus of Brooklyn edition by Helena Clare Pittman Literature Fiction eBooks
A delightful book of everyday life in Brooklyn. The author's scenes, characters and events come alive because of her amazing writing. Nine year old Ruthie takes the reader into her home and thoughts. Through the universal challenges of being bullied, facing the death of someone loved, and having to meet the expectations of teachers, parents and siblings, the author shows possibilities of dealing with such challenges for middle grade readers. I would recommend this to readers from nine to ninety-nine.Product details

Ruthie Pincus of Brooklyn edition by Helena Clare Pittman Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This is a moving exploration of that place we all inhabit, a place that is, simultaneously, our past, our present and our future. And yet Ruthie is her own person sensitive, intelligent, feisty, and a reliable chronicler of family life and the life of a culture. Highly recommended!
Ruthie Pincus 9 ½ year old citizen of Brooklyn. She is growing up during a turbulent period and her family has ties to revolution and persecution. The book is written in a style that gives the reader a "day in the life" type of view of Ruthie's world. Each chapter is like capsule of a time or place or event. Pittman writes from the child's perspective, this makes some of the engrossing adult situations understandable for young readers.
Politics, mental illness and death are captured in vivid detail from a child's point of view. Pittman infuses the story with emotion and humor so that even the heavy content is palatable. This is a great coming of age story that will whet your appetite for more.
This delightful book was inspired by by the author's childhood experiences in Brooklyn. "Ruthie Pincus of Brooklyn" is structured into five books, each of which contains six or twelve almost self-contained chapters--and some poetry.
Pittman claims that the fictional Ruthie and her family are not analogues of her own relations. They are nonetheless vivid and full of compelling life; one supposes they must be composite entities, of the kind that appear in dreams when deep and inchoate memories are stirred. In particular, Pittman's Jewish background is deeply entwined with most of the stories.
I've never been to America, but after living vicariously with Ruthie's family and basking in her thoughts, I think I understand her quaint, Brooklynite corner of the world quite well.
From the start of the preface to the last chapter of Book 5, Pittman's writing has an air of truth that is both fragile and compelling. The novel is a fun insight into the daily life of Ruthie Pincus, an "almost ten year old" girl growing up in Brooklyn during a trying time, with a family with deep connections to persecution and revolution. Pittman's attention to detail in the plot makes the entire novel realistic, as she focuses on things that a normal girl would (and often gets forgotten about in novels), such as the way her mother washes dishes or her intense focus on collecting things, which perfectly captures Ruthie's innocence.
The chapters appear more like separate vignettes, which makes it interesting to jump from one topic to the next and allows the novel to progress at a reasonable pace. Even though it handles complicated concepts, such as religious tension, mental illness and the reality of death, telling the story through Ruthie's eyes adds a unique perspective that makes it suitable for young adults. Very rarely do you find such real emotion and are able to follow the sudden shift from joy to sadness, but Pittman successfully accomplishes both. Using humor, such as Ruthie struggling to figure out why collecting meat fat isn't acceptable behavior, Pittman manages to tie multiple plot points together into a fantastic, coming-of-age Brooklyn story.
